Tencent Attacks Sony Lawsuit Over Game Accused Of Copying Horizon

Tencent, the Chinese tech giant, is embroiled in a lawsuit with Sony over the alleged copying of the Horizon game series in its upcoming title, Light of Motiram. Sony had filed a lawsuit against Tencent, claiming that Light of Motiram had a striking resemblance to Horizon Zero Dawn. However, Tencent is now arguing that Sony's lawsuit has no merit and that the case should be dismissed. Tencent's motion to dismiss accuses Sony of attempting to "fence off a well-trodden corner of popular culture and declare it Sony's exclusive domain." Tencent argues that the similarities between Horizon Zero Dawn and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, an earlier game, contradict Sony's claim that Horizon Zero Dawn is "like no fictional world created before [or] since." Tencent also states that the meeting between the two companies about a potential Horizon spin-off mobile game, which was ultimately rejected by Sony, does not prove any wrongdoing by Tencent. Furthermore, Tencent argues that the Tencent Holdings, Tencent America, and Proxima Beta U.S. subsidiaries should be dismissed from the lawsuit as Sony has failed to substantiate the claims against them. Tencent also notes that since Light of Motiram has not been released yet, the alleged infringements have not occurred and may never occur.
