TikTok won't add end-to-end encryption to DMs
TikTok has announced that it will not implement end-to-end encryption for direct messages on its platform, citing concerns over user safety. The company argues that such encryption would prevent its safety teams and law enforcement from accessing messages, even when needed. TikTok claims that its current encryption methods and authorized employee access are sufficient to address safety and security concerns. The decision is in contrast with other popular messaging apps like iMessage, WhatsApp, and Signal, which offer end-to-end encryption. TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, is located in China, where the use of such encryption technology is less common. It's unclear if TikTok's US entity, which is partially owned by non-Chinese investors, will take the same stance on end-to-end encryption.
