ICC charges Rodrigo Duterte with crimes against humanity

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has charged former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte with crimes against humanity. The charges are related to his "war on drugs" campaign, which resulted in the deaths of dozens of people. Duterte, who served as president from 2016 to 2022, is accused of being directly involved in the killings or of having knowledge of the crimes and failing to prevent or punish those responsible. The ICC prosecutor's office said that there is "a reasonable basis to believe that the crime against humanity of murder has been committed" during Duterte's tenure. The charges come after a lengthy investigation by the ICC, which has been examining the situation in the Philippines since 2018. Duterte has previously stated that he will not cooperate with the ICC's investigation, and has threatened to arrest the court's prosecutor if they attempt to enter the country.
