Intel gives us a glimpse of its Panther Lake Core Ultra chips

Intel has revealed more information about its upcoming Core Ultra series 3 laptop processors, codenamed Panther Lake. These processors will be built using Intel's 2-nanometer 18A process at its Arizona plant in the United States. The Core Ultra series 3 system-on-chips will be primarily used in high-end laptops, gaming devices, and edge solutions. They are expected to offer up to 50% more processing performance compared to previous generations, with up to 16 performance cores (P-cores) and efficiency cores (E-cores). Additionally, the integrated Arc GPU will see a 50% performance boost, with up to 12 cores, and the XPU design for AI acceleration will have up to 180 Platform TOPS. Intel has described its 18A architecture as "the most advanced semiconductor node developed and manufactured in the United States." However, the company has reportedly struggled with the yields needed to start production, let alone make a profit. The success of the new Panther Lake chips is crucial for Intel's comeback as a chip fab, as the company has faced financial challenges, including a $2.9 billion loss in Q2 and potential workforce reductions.
