Gizmodo Science Fair: A Giant ‘Kite’ That Generates Clean Energy Underwater

Minesto, a Swedish energy company, is developing a unique underwater "kite" system to generate clean energy from tidal currents. The system, called Deep Green, uses a tethered kite that moves in a figure-eight pattern, capturing the kinetic energy of the tidal flow and converting it into electricity. The company has recently announced plans to deploy its Deep Green technology in the Faroe Islands, a self-governing archipelago in the North Atlantic. This project will see the installation of multiple Deep Green units, which are capable of generating up to 1.5 megawatts of power each. The Deep Green system is designed to operate in areas with relatively low-velocity tidal currents, making it a promising solution for regions that may not be suitable for traditional tidal or offshore wind turbines. Minesto believes this technology could play a significant role in the global transition to renewable energy, providing a reliable and sustainable source of electricity.
