Hyper Light Breaker Winding Down Development Amid Studio Layoffs
Hyper Light Breaker, the prequel to the acclaimed 2016 game Hyper Light Drifter, is winding down its development due to layoffs at the game's developer, Heart Machine. The studio spokesperson cited broader forces beyond their control, including shifts in funding, corporate consolidation, and the uncertain environment that many small studios are navigating. Despite the setback, Heart Machine plans to deliver a more polished version of Hyper Light Breaker in January 2026 as a final update. The studio is doing its best to refine the game and complete key systems, aiming to provide a satisfying conclusion to the project. Meanwhile, Heart Machine is also preparing to release Possessor(s), a metroidvania game, on November 11 for PC and PS5.
