Microsoft escapes EU antitrust fine after unbundling Teams
Microsoft has avoided an EU antitrust fine by making changes to its bundling of the Teams collaboration platform with its other apps. The European Commission had opened an investigation in 2023, finding that Microsoft's practice of bundling Teams with its productivity suites violated antitrust laws. To address the Commission's concerns, Microsoft has unbundled Teams from Office 365 and Microsoft 365 in the EU, offering versions of these suites without Teams at a lower price. Microsoft has also committed to improving interoperability between Teams and its competitors' products, as well as allowing customers to extract their Teams data for use in other services. These commitments, which will be monitored by a trustee for 7-10 years, have satisfied the Commission's requirements, allowing Microsoft to avoid a fine that could have amounted to 10% of its annual worldwide turnover.
