'Buffy' Star Nicholas Brendon Has Passed Away at Age 54

Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander Harris on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, died on Friday. He was 54 years old. In a statement to the Hollywood Reporter, Brendon’s family revealed he passed in his sleep from “natural causes.” In 2023, he disclosed surviving a heart attack and being diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. Prior to that, he’d been known to have several spinal surgeries due to his cauda equina syndrome. Born April 12, 1971, Nicholas Brendon left his dreams of being a basketball player behind to pursue acting to help manage his stuttering. He auditioned for Buffy after figuring out Xander was based partially on creator Joss Whedon’s high school experiences and became a fan favorite. As one of Buffy’s best friends, he appears in all but one episode, and was nominated for three Saturn Awards during the show’s run. After it ended, he was involved in several Xander-focused comics and remained active with the Buffy community. We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon.
