Tesla’s ‘robotaxi’ rides in San Francisco have a human at the wheel

Tesla has launched a ridehailing service in San Francisco, but it is not yet a fully autonomous "robotaxi" service. The service currently requires a human driver to be present in the vehicle, as Tesla has only obtained one of the three permits required by California to operate a commercial robotaxi service. In comparison, Waymo, owned by Alphabet, is the only company with all the necessary permits to offer commercial driverless rides in San Francisco. Despite this, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has stated plans to expand the robotaxi service to Florida, Nevada, and Arizona, even though the service in Texas and California has not yet achieved the "no one in the car" level of autonomy that Musk had previously promised.
