Fifa’s Club World Cup to take place in summer 2029 – and not in Qatar

Fifa has announced that the next Club World Cup will be held in the summer of 2029, instead of Qatar as previously proposed. This decision is intended to improve relations with Europe. The tournament is also likely to feature more than the 32 clubs that competed in the United States this summer, with Fifa indicating that some expansion is likely, although an immediate leap to the 48-team model used for the men's World Cup is not guaranteed. The move comes as Fifa faces pressure from leading clubs to expand the tournament, with Chelsea earning £85m from the £750m prize and participation fund in the latest edition.
