Patrick Vaughan obituary

Patrick Vaughan, a renowned epidemiologist, passed away at the age of 87. Despite facing educational challenges in his early life, he overcame them and went on to become a leading figure in the field of public health. Vaughan worked as a director of the Tropical Epidemiology Unit at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and authored over 120 research papers. He provided valuable health advice to numerous organizations, including the World Health Organization, governments, the World Bank, and the NHS. Vaughan's expertise was also sought by charities, such as the organizers of Live Aid, who sought his advice on how to effectively channel the £150 million raised to relieve famine in Ethiopia. Overcoming his difficult childhood, Vaughan's strength of character is said to have inspired the character of Piggy in William Golding's novel "Lord of the Flies."
