Google Japan’s concept keyboard is inspired by rotary phones

Google Japan has unveiled a unique keyboard concept inspired by rotary phones. The "Gboard Dial Version" keyboard features a series of dials instead of traditional keys. To type a character, users insert their finger into the corresponding hole and rotate the dial until it reaches its limit, at which point it rotates back to its home position. The concept draws inspiration from the pulse dialing technology used in rotary phones, with the dials' rotational movements being translated into USB signals. The keyboard also includes a stand that turns off the webcam during video calls when the mouse is placed on it, similar to the physical hang-up feature of old phones. While not available for purchase, Google has open-sourced the design, allowing users to build their own "Gboard Dial Version" keyboards using 3D printer models, PCB designs, and a parts list provided on GitHub.
