Meta will warn WhatsApp and Messenger users against scams

Meta is launching new tools to protect users from potential scams on WhatsApp and Messenger. The company has detected and disrupted nearly 8 million accounts associated with scam centers in several countries since the beginning of 2025. Meta has also taken action on over 21,000 Facebook pages pretending to be customer support services. On WhatsApp, users will see warning notices if they attempt to share their screen with someone not on their contacts list during a video call, as scammers sometimes use this tactic to steal sensitive information. In Messenger, users will receive a warning notice for potentially scammy messages, with details on common scam signs and the option to report and block the account. Meta is also testing advanced scam detection tools in Messenger chats and encouraging users to set up passkeys and run Security Checkup to review their security settings. The company acknowledges that more work is needed to address scams, especially those targeting the elderly and less tech-savvy users.
