The California Digital Age Assurance Act (AB 1043) has cleared the Assembly 58-0 and is now moving to Governor Gavin Newsom for approval. It does not require photo identification but instead puts the onus on platforms to provide tools for parents to indicate the user's age during device setup, which would then be used to steer kids toward age-appropriate content and screen time. The bill has received more positive support from tech giants like Google, Meta, and others, who have expressed their approval in the lead-up to the Senate vote. The bill is seen as a more thoughtful approach to keeping kids safe online, compared to the age verification laws adopted earlier this year in Utah and Texas, which have faced criticism for potential privacy risks.
