Shelton’s first career retirement and Tiafoe loss leave US men reeling at Open

The US men's tennis players faced a setback at the US Open, with Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe being eliminated from the tournament. Shelton, the 6th seed and a potential contender for the title, was forced to retire due to a shoulder injury while leading his third-round match against Adrian Mannarino. This marked Shelton's first career retirement. In a separate match, Tiafoe, a highly-ranked American player, was defeated in straight sets by qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff. With these losses, only Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul remain as the last US men still alive in the singles draw.
