Let’s be honest: we’re seven months into 2026, and there’s been a shocking lack of movie musicals. What’s worse, most that have been released this year — shout out to the utterly pointless and box-office-bomb live-action version of Moana — have been utter duds. What stirs the heart in a musical movie differs from person to person, but we can all agree the best ones have songs that lean into their role as narrative tools while also reflecting the world we live in. Meanwhile, the movie musicals that are the worst have a shallow message with bad acting and even worse singing. I’m thinking of 2019’s Cats and 2021’s Dear Evan Hansen. With that in mind, you’ll understand why I’m feeling a little put out that the greatest musical movie that 2026 has on offer so far is is — let me check my notes — a vapid and saccharine movie involving the Jonas Brothers and Paul Rudd.
