US Will Call on Other Nations to Restrict Global Asylum Rights

The US government plans to use the upcoming United Nations General Assembly to urge other nations to impose more restrictions on granting asylum to migrants and refugees. This move aligns with President Donald Trump's hardline stance on immigration. The proposed changes aim to limit the number of people who can seek asylum globally, contrary to the principles of the 1951 Refugee Convention which guarantees the right to seek asylum. The US has already taken steps to restrict asylum access, including limiting the categories of people eligible and forcing asylum-seekers to wait in Mexico while their claims are processed. By pushing other countries to adopt similar policies, the US hopes to further reduce the number of migrants and refugees entering the country. This proposal reflects the Trump administration's continued efforts to overhaul the US immigration system and curb the influx of asylum-seekers, despite concerns from human rights advocates about the potential impact on vulnerable populations.
