Wood burners may treble children’s exposure to pollution in homes, study finds

A study in Wales found that children living in homes with wood burners may be exposed to over three times more air pollution than those in non-wood-burning homes. The research focused on the air pollution experienced by primary schoolchildren, with 53 children from two schools carrying backpacks equipped with air pollution sensors during their daily activities, including journeys to and from school. The results showed that the home environment, rather than outdoor travel, was the largest contributor to the children's daily exposure to air pollution. The study highlights the potential health risks associated with the use of wood burners in residential settings and the need for further investigation into the impact of indoor air quality on children's health.
