Broadcom launches next-gen Wi-Fi 8 silicon for home gateways, handhelds

Broadcom has launched its next-generation Wi-Fi 8 silicon for home gateways, handhelds, and enterprise access points. The company is already sampling the new chips, including the BCM6718 for residential access points, the BCM43109 for mobile devices, and the BCM43840 and BCM43820 for enterprise APs. The new Wi-Fi 8 technology is designed to improve the quality and reliability of wireless connections, with features like inter-AP coordination, congestion avoidance, and extended range. Broadcom's chips also include a hardware-accelerated telemetry engine that collects real-time data on network performance, device behavior, and environmental conditions, which can be used for optimizing the Wi-Fi experience, predictive maintenance, and security. The company claims that the increasing ubiquity of AI and high-bandwidth data streams necessitate the advancements in Wi-Fi 8 technology.
