The UK's antitrust regulator will keep a closer eye on Google Search

The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has designated Google with strategic market status (SMS) under the new digital markets competition regime. This means the CMA has found that Google holds "substantial and entrenched market power and a position of strategic significance" in the general search and search advertising services. The CMA can now launch interventions to ensure these services in the UK are "open to effective competition" and that businesses relying on Google are being treated fairly. Google has warned that some of the proposed interventions could "inhibit UK innovation and growth, potentially slowing product launches" and "pose direct harm to businesses," potentially leading to higher prices for consumers. The CMA is expected to start consulting on possible interventions later this year.
