Uber will (once again) test delivering food by drone this year

Uber Eats is partnering with drone operator Flytrex to test drone deliveries in the United States by the end of this year. The partnership will enable Uber Eats customers to receive orders within minutes, reducing road congestion. Flytrex is one of the four providers authorized by the FAA for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations, allowing pilots to control the drones without directly seeing them. Uber is also making an investment in Flytrex to accelerate the deployment of its drone technology. This is not Uber's first attempt at drone-based food delivery, as the company had previously tested the service in 2020 but did not achieve a wide release. The new partnership is expected to have a much wider reach, as Uber aims to bring the speed and sustainability of drone delivery to the Uber Eats platform at scale.
