Uber found not guilty in first of many sexual assault lawsuits
Uber was found not responsible by a California jury for a 2016 sexual assault case involving an 18-year-old college student. This is the first of thousands of similar lawsuits in the U.S. from women claiming they were assaulted by Uber drivers. The jury ruled that while Uber was negligent, its negligence was not a substantial factor in causing harm to the victim, Jessica C. Her lawyers accused Uber of covering up the scale of its sexual assault problem, revealing that over 558,000 trips had resulted in reports of sexual assault or misconduct from 2017 to 2024. Uber claimed it couldn't guarantee that driver transgressions would never occur and that it wasn't responsible for driver misconduct. The company said it has worked to improve safety on its platform, but the plaintiff's attorney argued the decision discourages victims of sexual assault from coming forward.
