Swiss downhill racer Von Allmen edges out Italians to win first gold of Winter Olympics

Swiss downhill racer Franjo von Allmen won the gold medal in the men's downhill event at the Winter Olympics in Bormio, Italy. The 24-year-old skier produced a stunning run on the Stelvio course, finishing with a time of 1:51.61, which was 0.70 seconds faster than the pre-race favorite, Marco Odermatt, also from Switzerland, who missed the podium. The Italian skiers Giovanni Franzoni and Dominik Paris claimed the silver and bronze medals, respectively, in front of a crowd of 7,000 spectators at the Italian resort. Franzoni finished 0.20 seconds behind von Allmen, while Paris was 0.50 seconds off the winning time.
