Pharmacies can issue UTI drugs without GP visit

The Welsh government has announced that from October, most pharmacies in Wales will be able to issue UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) medication to women under the age of 64 without a prior visit to a general practitioner (GP). This new policy aims to provide faster and more convenient access to treatment for women with UTIs, a common and often recurrent condition. Pharmacists will be able to assess the patient, determine the appropriate medication, and issue the prescription directly. The move is expected to alleviate pressure on GP services and reduce waiting times for UTI treatment. Patients will still be advised to consult a GP if the infection persists or if they have any underlying health conditions. This policy change is part of a broader effort by the Welsh government to improve primary care services and empower pharmacists to take on a more significant role in the delivery of certain healthcare services.
