Google removes ICE-spotting app following Apple’s ICEBlock crackdown

Google has removed the app "Red Dot" from the Google Play Store, following a similar move by Apple to take down the iOS app "ICEBlock." Both apps allowed users to anonymously report sightings of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and view nearby reports. The removal of these apps comes after pressure from the Department of Justice, which claimed that such apps "put ICE agents at risk." The ICEBlock developer has argued that the app is "protected speech," but the companies have cited policies against apps with a high risk of abuse and a requirement for content moderation. Google stated that it did not receive a warning from the DOJ, but it has removed similar apps for violations of its policies.
