TiVo has sold its last DVR

TiVo, the pioneering digital video recorder (DVR) company, has officially ceased the production of its hardware products after 26 years in the industry. The company's last DVR release was the TiVo Edge in 2019, and it has now confirmed that it will no longer manufacture or sell any DVR hardware, including accessories, as of September 30, 2025. The decision to discontinue the hardware business comes as a result of the increasing popularity of streaming services and the integration of cloud-based video recording functions by cable TV providers, which have eroded the demand for standalone DVRs. TiVo has made the bulk of its revenue by licensing its portfolio of patents, including the Time Warp technology that allowed users to fast-forward through advertisements on recorded TV. Despite the end of its hardware business, TiVo will continue to exist as a software provider for smart TVs and vehicle infotainment systems, and it has promised to support its now obsolete hardware products going forward.
