GM ends development of hydrogen fuel cells

General Motors (GM) has announced that it will discontinue the development of its HYDROTEC brand's hydrogen fuel cell technology. Instead, the company will focus its research and development efforts on batteries, charging technologies, and electric vehicles. The decision comes due to the limited infrastructure and high costs associated with hydrogen fuel cells, which have hindered their adoption in the consumer vehicle market. GM will, however, continue its Fuel Cell System Manufacturing joint venture with Honda, which produces fuel cells for data centers and power generation. This move follows a similar decision made by Toyota in February, where the company shifted its hydrogen cell projects to focus on industrial applications rather than consumer ones. The automotive industry appears to be aligned in prioritizing the development of battery-electric vehicles over hydrogen fuel cell technology for consumer use.
