Plug-in hybrids pollute almost as much as petrol cars, report finds

The report found that plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) emit nearly five times more greenhouse gas emissions in real-world driving conditions than what is shown in laboratory tests. The analysis was conducted on 800,000 European cars, revealing that the pollution levels from PHEVs are almost as high as those of traditional petrol-powered cars. This contradicts the industry's claim that PHEVs are a more environmentally-friendly alternative to fully electric vehicles, as they can still rely on combustion engines for longer journeys. The findings raise concerns about the accuracy of official emissions data and the environmental benefits of PHEVs, which have been promoted as a transitional technology towards fully electric vehicles.
