Sharp global rise in antibiotic-resistant infections in hospitals, WHO finds

The World Health Organization (WHO) has found a sharp global increase in antibiotic-resistant infections in hospitals. Experts describe the findings as deeply concerning, predicting a 70% rise in related deaths by 2050. Hospitals worldwide have recorded a concerning increase in common infections that are resistant to antibiotics. In 2023, one in six laboratory-confirmed bacterial infections were resistant to antibiotic treatments. Moreover, more than 40% of antibiotics lost their potency against common blood, gut, urinary tract, and sexually-transmitted infections between 2018 and 2023. The rise in antibiotic-resistant infections poses a significant threat to public health, as doctors face increasing difficulty in treating these infections effectively. The WHO's findings underscore the urgent need for global action to address this growing challenge and develop new strategies to combat the spread of antibiotic resistance.
