Tesla Model Y door handles now under federal safety scrutiny

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into the door handles of Tesla's Model Y SUV. The investigation was prompted by multiple reports of the door handles failing to operate properly, potentially trapping occupants, including children and pets, inside the vehicle. The issue appears to be related to the 12V power system in the Model Y, which is responsible for the functionality of the door handles. When the 12V system loses power, the door handles may become inoperable, preventing the doors from being opened from the inside. The NHTSA is currently evaluating the scope and severity of the problem, as well as any potential safety risks associated with the door handle issue. Tesla has not yet issued a formal recall, but the investigation could lead to one if the agency determines that the problem poses a significant safety concern.
