Epic will let Fortnite creators sell in-game items in latest attempt to compete with Roblox

Epic Games, the developer of Fortnite, is introducing a new feature that will allow creators to sell in-game items within their Fortnite experiences. This move is seen as an attempt to compete with the popular platform Roblox, which has a thriving creator economy. Under the new system, Fortnite developers will be able to create and sell consumable and durable in-game items using tools provided by Epic. The revenue split will initially be generous, with developers earning 50% of the V-Bucks (Fortnite's in-game currency) spent on their items. This percentage will increase to 100% from December 2025 to the end of 2026. Epic's 50% cut is intended to cover server hosting, safety, moderation, and other operational expenses. The company claims it has been operating Fortnite at a loss, making this revenue-sharing model a way to support the platform's sustainability. In addition to the in-game item sales, Fortnite developers will also have the opportunity to pay for featured placement in a new "Sponsored row" within the game's Discover feed. This is part of Epic's broader efforts to transform Fortnite into a platform for diverse games and social experiences, rather than just a battle royale game.
