China says NVIDIA's Mellanox acquisition violated antitrust law
China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) has accused NVIDIA of violating the country's antitrust laws in its $6.9 billion acquisition of chipmaker Mellanox. SAMR claims that NVIDIA breached both national regulations and the conditional terms China outlined when it approved the deal in 2020. While no penalties have been announced yet, the investigation is ongoing. The SAMR is said to have held off on releasing its preliminary findings until now, potentially to give Chinese officials more leverage during ongoing trade talks with the U.S. Last month, China was reportedly discouraging companies from buying NVIDIA's H20 chips, citing national security concerns. This came after the U.S. Commerce Secretary's remarks about NVIDIA not selling its "best stuff" to China, in an effort to keep the country dependent on American technology.
