OpenAI and Sam Altman are reportedly creating a startup rival to Elon Musk's Neuralink
OpenAI and Sam Altman are reportedly creating a startup called Merge Labs to rival Elon Musk's Neuralink, a company working on brain-computer interfaces. Merge Labs will use AI for its brain-computer interface and compete with Neuralink, as well as other companies in the field like Precision Neuroscience and Synchron. The startup will raise funds, mostly from OpenAI's ventures team, which will set its valuation at $850 million. Altman, who has been interested in the topic of machine-brain interfaces for years, will co-found Merge Labs with Alex Blania, but will not invest any capital himself. The move intensifies the rivalry between Altman and Musk, which began when Musk left OpenAI's board in 2018. Neuralink has already started human trials, with two subjects, Noland Arbaugh and "Alex," reporting positive results in activities like playing FPS games and creating 3D designs.
