Microsoft forced to make Windows 10 extended security updates truly free in Europe

Microsoft has been forced to make its extended security updates for Windows 10 truly free in certain markets in Europe. Previously, users had to enable Windows Backup, which required a Microsoft account and OneDrive storage, to receive the extra year of security updates. However, due to pressure from the Euroconsumers group, Microsoft is now offering the extended security updates free without the Windows Backup requirement in the European Economic Area. This change is a result of the consumer advocacy group's efforts to ensure better support for those still running Windows 10 across Europe. The group has also been trying to convince Microsoft to extend the security updates beyond the initial year, to avoid leaving devices "exposed to risk" next year. The changes made by Microsoft only apply to the European Economic Area, while the rest of the world will still need to either enable Windows Backup or pay $30 for the year or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Reward points to receive the extended security updates.
