Meta will let outside developers create AI-powered apps for its smart glasses

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is opening up its smart glasses to outside developers, allowing them to create AI-powered apps for the company's RayBan and Oakley smart glasses. This move will significantly expand the capabilities of Meta's smart glasses, which have previously had only a limited number of third-party integrations. The company is working with early partners, such as Twitch, Disney, and 18Birdies, to develop custom experiences that take advantage of the glasses' built-in sensors and audio capabilities. These apps will work with Meta's non-display glasses, which means that even owners of the first-generation Ray-Ban Meta glasses could benefit from the added functionality. While it's unclear if developers will also be able to build experiences for the display on Meta's newest Ray-Ban Display frames, the company's new "Wearables Device Access Toolkit" will roll out as a limited developer preview ahead of broader availability in 2026, paving the way for a more diverse and feature-rich ecosystem of smart glass applications.
