Twelve states have sued to block Paramountâs takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery, CNNâs parent, kicking off a high-stakes antitrust battle that could impede the media mega-merger. California Attorney General Rob Bonta said the antitrust lawsuit, filed Monday in the Northern District of California, is necessary because âthis merger would snuff out competition, drive up prices, diminish content quality, and produce fewer movies and shows each year.â On Monday night the states asked the court for a temporary restraining order and a preliminary injunction. The motion was made to âmake sure that the proposed merger is halted during the pendency of the litigation,â Bonta told CNNâs Kaitlan Collins. If a judge agrees and imposes a restraining order, Paramount would be blocked from completing the deal for the time being, though the company would almost certainly appeal. Paramount said Monday that it will fight the lawsuit vigorously.
