Google will upgrade its revenge porn defenses with help from a UK nonprofit

Google is partnering with a UK nonprofit, StopNCII, to combat non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII), also known as revenge porn. The company will begin using StopNCII's hashes, which are user-uploaded digital fingerprints that can block individuals' unwanted intimate content from appearing in search results. StopNCII's system allows users to create a digital fingerprint of an image and upload it, without the image itself leaving the device. This helps remove the content if it is uploaded to participating platforms, which include Google, Meta, Reddit, Pornhub, and others. While the system is not foolproof, as it does not work for unknown images or AI-generated content, it is a significant step in Google's efforts to address the issue of revenge porn. The partnership aims to reduce the burden on those affected by this problem.
