Perplexity’s $200-a-month ‘AI’ Comet browser is now free

Perplexity, a tech company, has launched a new "AI" browser called Comet. Initially, the browser was available only through a $200-per-month subscription plan, known as the "Max" plan. However, the company has now made the Comet browser available for free to anyone who wants to use it. The Comet browser is designed to browse the web on the user's behalf, with the aim of excluding malware and other undesirable content. The browser utilizes a large language model (LLM) to power its "Sidecar" feature, which offers various tools such as text generation, shopping, and logging in using the user's identity. While the free version of the Comet browser is now accessible, users will still need to subscribe to the $200-per-month plan to access the full range of features. Without the subscription, users will be subject to rate limits on the browser's tools. Chris Hoffman, who tested the Comet browser, found it to be interesting but quite basic in its current state, noting that it is more of a "flashy demo" than a practical day-to-day browser.
