AOL's dial-up internet still exists, but not for much longer

AOL's dial-up internet service, which has been in existence for 34 years, will be discontinued on September 30. While the service was once widely used, with millions of subscribers, it has since become largely irrelevant due to the rise of much faster broadband options. Today, only a few thousand users still rely on AOL's dial-up service as an affordable way to access the internet in rural areas. Along with the dial-up service, AOL Dialer software and AOL Shield browser will also be discontinued. The announcement marks the end of an era in internet history, as the iconic AOL dial-up sound will now only be heard through recreations on social media.
