Peter Whybrow obituary

Peter Whybrow, a renowned neuropsychiatrist and writer, passed away at the age of 86. His research significantly reshaped the understanding and treatment of mood disorders. In the mid-1980s, Whybrow and his colleague Marc Bauer encountered a case involving a 41-year-old doctor who had undergone thyroid surgery 10 years earlier. The patient began exhibiting erratic behavior, including going out at night and not returning home, followed by periods of severe depression where he would stay in bed for a week. Despite being diagnosed with manic depression and treated with lithium, the patient's rapid cycling between depression and mania did not improve, and withdrawal from lithium led to a wild manic episode. Whybrow's groundbreaking work on this case and others like it helped to redefine the understanding and treatment of mood disorders, making a significant impact on the field of neuropsychiatry.
