The dense forests, twisting rivers and granite peaks of Northern Irelandâs Mourne Mountains have lived many lives and assumed many names. Theyâre Westeros in âGame of Thrones.â Theyâre âKryptonâ in the Superman prequel. Theyâre also Transylvania in âDracula Untoldâ, Sherwood in the upcoming âDeath of Robin Hoodâ and the Forgotten Realms in âDungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.â As part of the Mourne Gullion Strangford global geopark, this mountain region in Irelandâs northeast achieved UNESCO recognition in 2023, but relatively small numbers of international visitors come to explore. However, the lyrically named Kingdom of Mourne â it was never a sovereign state â has been inspiring imaginations globally for more than 75 years.
