SpaceX's Starshield satellites are reportedly transmitting signals on unauthorized frequencies

SpaceX's Starshield satellites, a classified version of the Starlink network for government agencies, may be violating international telecommunication standards by transmitting on unauthorized frequencies. According to amateur satellite tracker Scott Tilley, the Starshield satellites appear to be broadcasting on frequencies normally used for uplink transmissions from Earth to satellites, which is against the standards set by the International Telecommunication Union. This could potentially cause interference with nearby satellites and disrupt their communication with Earth. While it's not clear if this issue is causing any immediate problems, the unauthorized use of frequencies could lead to technical issues in the future. SpaceX has not yet commented on the matter, but the company's Starshield project has been involved in various government contracts, including a $70 million deal with the US Space Force in 2023 and reports of building a network of spy satellites for the Department of Defense's National Reconnaissance Office in 2024.
