Stellantis cancels Ram 1500 REV as electric truck demand dims

Stellantis, the automotive giant, has announced the cancellation of its Ram 1500 REV electric truck, citing slowing sales of heavy-duty electric trucks. However, the company will rename its Range-Extended Electric Vehicle (REEV) Ramcharger pickup to the Ram 1500 REV, promising exceptional range, towing capability, and payload performance. The decision follows the resignation of Stellantis' CEO Carlos Tavares and a sharp decline in the automaker's sales, with accusations of degrading its US brands and failing to release more affordable models. The Ramcharger and the Rev were both planned to be built on Stellantis' STLA Frame body-on-frame platform, designed to handle various powertrain options. Stellantis' move is part of a broader trend in the automotive industry, as many automakers are delaying their EV production plans due to the elimination of federal tax credits and other incentives. The electrification of large, heavy trucks has proven to be a challenging segment, with slower-than-expected sales for models like the Ford F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T, and Tesla Cybertruck.
