NHTSA launches probe into Tesla’s ‘full self driving’ tech
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a probe into 2.88 million Tesla electric vehicles equipped with the company's "Full Self-Driving" (FSD) system. The agency has received over 50 reports of traffic safety violations and crashes, including incidents where Tesla vehicles with FSD engaged ran red lights and drove against the flow of traffic. The NHTSA said Tesla's FSD software has "induced vehicle behavior that violated traffic safety laws," posing a potential risk to public safety. The probe will start as a preliminary evaluation, and the NHTSA may issue a recall if it deems the vehicles to be a significant threat. This is not the first time the NHTSA has investigated Tesla's driver assistance features. The agency has also looked into the company's Smart Summon and Actual Smart Summon features, as well as issues with the 2021 Model Y's door handles. Tesla has argued that its FSD technology reduces accidents, but has resisted releasing specific crash data involving FSD, citing confidentiality.
