Amazon says its AI will let NBA fans track brand-new stats

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is set to introduce a new basketball intelligence platform called "NBA Inside the Game" for the 2025-2026 NBA season. This platform will provide NBA fans with more detailed player metrics and analytics powered by AI and advanced movement tracking. The new technology will track 29 body parts of each player on the court, allowing the AI system to deliver stats that capture previously unmeasured aspects of basketball. These include tracking individual defenders during offensive plays, quantifying the difficulty of attempted shots, and predicting the odds of a player making a shot based on factors like the shooter's orientation and the positions of the defenders. Additionally, the platform will introduce a "Gravity" stat to quantify the "advantage" individual players bring to the court by analyzing their movement and the movement of their defenders with and without the ball. The "Defensive Score Box" will also provide insights into the performance of defensive players. Fans will be able to access these new statistics through live NBA game broadcasts, the NBA app, and the NBA website. The partnership between the NBA and Amazon is not new, as the two companies struck an 11-year media rights deal in 2024 to stream 66 regular-season NBA games per year on Prime Video.
