Hungary parliament elects former supreme court head Andras Baka as president | CNN

Hungaryâs parliament elected Andras Baka, a âformer head of the Supreme Court, â as the countryâs next president â on Tuesday, a symbolic step in Prime Minister âPeter â Magyarâs effort to dismantle former premier Viktor Orbanâs bastions âof power. Baka âwas âelected âto the largely ceremonial role â with the votes of âthe governing âcenter-right Tisza â party. Members of â the opposition âFidesz party did ânot âtake âpart âin the election. In a speech after taking the oath of office, Baka criticised the previous government, saying that during Orbanâs rule, âone party captured the stateâ, branches of power were not separate and there was no functioning system of checks and balances. However, he said that the task of building a new future for Hungary âdemands both justice and self-restraintâ and said that the presidentâs role was to represent citizens who hold differing views.
