Perplexity's definition of copyright gets it sued by the dictionary
Merriam-Webster and Encyclopedia Britannica have sued Perplexity, an AI company, for allegedly copying their copyrighted materials in its "answer engine" product. The plaintiffs claim that Perplexity's AI creates false or inaccurate information and wrongly attributes it to Britannica or Merriam-Webster, leading to copyright infringement. The lawsuit seeks monetary damages and an order to prevent Perplexity from misusing their content. This is not the first time Perplexity has faced allegations of copyright infringement, as it has previously been accused by the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, and two Japanese media companies, Nikkei and the Asahi Shimbun, for similar claims.
