Dolby Vision too dark? Dolby Vision 2 promises an AI-powered fix

Dolby Vision, a contrast-boosting HDR technology, has been a common complaint among viewers due to its tendency to make content appear too dark. This issue arises from the different viewing conditions between production studios and home environments. To address this problem, Dolby has introduced Dolby Vision 2, an AI-powered upgrade that aims to provide a more personalized viewing experience. Dolby Vision 2 incorporates features like Precision Black and Light Sense, which measure the ambient lighting conditions in the production studio and the viewer's living room, respectively. This information is then used to tailor the HDR images to the specific display and lighting environment, bringing the on-screen content closer to the creator's original vision. Additionally, Dolby Vision 2 includes Authentic Motion, which aims to improve motion handling without introducing the "soap-opera effect." This feature allows content creators to fine-tune the amount of de-judder for specific scenes and shots. While Dolby Vision 2 promises to address the "too dark" issue, it will only work on future TVs with built-in Dolby Vision 2 circuitry. Hisense is the first TV manufacturer to announce support for the upgraded HDR standard, with CANAL+ being the first content provider to pledge its commitment.
