Judge rejects Anthropic's record-breaking $1.5 billion settlement for AI copyright lawsuit
Judge William Alsup has rejected the $1.5 billion settlement Anthropic agreed to in a piracy lawsuit filed by over 500,000 writers. The federal judge expressed concerns that the deal was being "forced down the throat of authors" and that important details, such as the list of works and authors involved, were left unanswered. Alsup wants the lawyers to provide "very good notice" to class members and ensure that Anthropic cannot be sued for the same issue again. The judge has set deadlines for the lawyers to submit a final list of works and have the class members list and claim form approved by the court before granting preliminary approval for the settlement.
