Microsoft says SSD failures aren’t caused by August Windows 11 update
Microsoft has responded to rumors that the recent Windows 11 update KB5063878 is causing issues with solid-state drives (SSDs). The company has stated that it has found no connection between the update and the reported problems, such as SSDs disappearing from File Explorer and the BIOS. Microsoft has been investigating the issue and collecting user reports, but its internal testing and telemetry data have not shown an increase in hard drive failures or file corruptions after the update. The company is working with storage device partners, including NAND controller manufacturer Phison, to reproduce and resolve the problem. Until the root cause is identified and fixed, Microsoft has advised Windows 11 users with hard drives that are more than 60% full to avoid downloading, copying, or writing large files (several dozen GB in size) to prevent potential issues.
